lyrics

"We are Who We are"

We have a new friend coming today
A friend named Alex who moved from far away
That's all our teacher told us so far
But hopefully, hopefully
Alex will want to play with me

Uh-oh, we have a problem
There are differences we see
Alex has long hair and wears jeans just like me
And bright red shirt with a big blue truck
And pink and purple shoes
Is Alex a boy or a girl?
I can't tell and I'm confused

I am who I am
And you are who you are
All that matters is that we're friendly to each other
We might like some of the same things
But we don't always have to agree
Whether boy or girl or something else
You're still you and I'm still me

Someone asked "are you a girl?
You wear your hair long just like mine"
Alex smiled and said
"People ask me all the time.
Sometimes I feel like wearing dresses
And sometimes fancy ties
The truth is I've decided
I don't have to decide."

Because I am who I am
And you are who you are
All that matters is that we're friendly to each other
We might like some of the same things
But we don't always have to agree
Whether boy or girl or something else
You're still you and I'm still me

I went up to Alex and asked
"What do you like to do?"
Alex said "I like to draw"
And then asked me "What about you?"
I still don't know if Alex is a boy or a girl
But the more we get to know each other
The more I realize it doesn't really matter

Because I am who I am
And you are who you are
All that matters is that we're friendly to each other
We might like some of the same things
But we don't always have to agree
Whether boy or girl or something else
You're still you and I'm still me
